Ensuring safety: Increasing two-wheeler patrol a possible solution?

Sunday, August 29, 2021

Mysuru, with a vast floating population of tourists, has not made any particular scheme for ensuring the safety of its residents. Since the inception of the Nirbhaya Fund in 2013, no initiatives have been taken up in Mysuru for utilizing this fund. Only Bengaluru-centric proposals were submitted seeking funds under the scheme in the last five years i.e. from 2016- 17 onwards.

With a large number of secluded areas where people find good places for relaxing, especially during the evening hours, Mysuru needs urgent attention to upgrade the existing safety measures. The Foothills of Chamundi Hills, the Number of lakes around the city, ring roads etc are some of the cool places where people sit for some relaxing time, especially the young couples. However, many of these areas still remain secluded after 6:00 in the evening. Many instances, a large number of liquor bottles were seen on the Chamundi hills area, which often destroys the peaceful atmosphere.

Crimes like chain snatching, mobile snatching etc are being reported even in upmarket areas like Yadavagiri. There is an urgent need to fix the problem.

Increasing two-wheeler patrol inside the interior areas and possible secluded areas by police is one possibility, and the 'Nribhaya Fund' can be used for this. The public also should be able to suggest their ideas to ensure the safety of all in the heritage city, which is often referred as a peaceful and lovely city by all.
